Watches for changes made to the DOM tree, using a `MutationObserver`
- Use a `useEffect()` hook that depends on the values of `callback` and `options`.
- Check if the given `ref` is initialized. If it is, create a new `MutationObserver` and pass it the `callback`.
- Call `MutationObserver.observe()` with the given `options` to watch the given `ref` for changes.
- Use `MutationObserver.disconnect()` to remove the observer from the `ref` when the component unmounts.
```jsx
const useMutationObserver = (
ref,
callback,
options = {
attributes: true,
characterData: true,
childList: true,
subtree: true,
}
) => {
React.useEffect(() => {
if (ref.current) {
const observer = new MutationObserver(callback);
observer.observe(ref.current, options);
return () => observer.disconnect();
}
}, [callback, options]);
};
```
```jsx
const App = () => {
const mutationRef = React.useRef();
const [mutationCount, setMutationCount] = React.useState(0);
const incrementMutationCount = () => {
return setMutationCount(mutationCount + 1);
};
useMutationObserver(mutationRef, incrementMutationCount);
const [content, setContent] = React.useState('Hello world');
return (
<textarea
id="content-input"
style={{ width: '100%' }}
value={content}
onChange={e => setContent(e.target.value)}
/>
<div
style={{ width: '100%' }}
ref={mutationRef}
</div>
</div>
<div>
<h3>Mutation count {mutationCount}</h3>
</div>
);
};
ReactDOM.render(<App />, document.getElementById('root'));
